Are They Well Trained?

Like most dogs, the Boston Terrier takes time and patience when deciding to train them to do anything. To the left, Hershey is "dancing" where she gets on her hind legs and twirls in a circle on the command, "dance." Luckily, for Boston owners, this time is shortened from most dogs and thus the patience holds out a little better.
Because these are considered, (and are) such intelligent dogs, it can often only take a few weeks to train them to do most any trick. The owner must spend time each day however, in order to achieve this in such a short amount of time. Hershey is barely and year old and has learned to sit, stay, and dance. These are the only tricks she knows now for lack of time to teach her any others. Although some may say that, "any dog can learn these tricks in such a short amount of time," Boston's have the ability to listen better, and catch on quicker because they are eager to please their Person.

Where Did They Come From?

The Boston Terrier is considered a native American bred dogs, meaning Boston's originated in the United States of America. The came about in the late 1800's and have been nicknamed America's Gentleman Breed. Some think that Boston's are a mix between an English Bull Dog and an English Terrier. Giving the name Boston Bull Terrier.
"About 1870 William O'Brien of Boston sold an imported dog named "Judge" to Robert C. Hooper, also of Boston. This dog was commonly known as "Hooper's Judge" and became the ancestor of almost all true modern Boston Terriers. He was mated to a white bitch owned by Edward Burnett named "Gyp" or "Kate". From that mating descended a dog named "Wells' Eph" who was bred to a bitch named "Tobin's Kate". The Boston Terrier as a breed evolved from these dogs.
In 1889 about thirty fanciers in and around Boston organized what was known as the American Bull Terrier Club." -www.akc.org
The American Kennel Club initiated the Boston Terrier into the Stud Book in 1893

Do they play well with others?

Some dog owners forget one important aspect of puppy shopping, "do I have other dogs, and would they get along well?" From personal experience I would say that all dogs generally are easy to take to puppies. This is especially true if your dog is friendly first of all with people and a well trained good listener. You can look at my link on the left hand side of the page for puppy training techniques. Puppies on the other hand tend to be fearful at first depending on their age, by 4 months old the Boston Terrier seems to be fearless around people and other animals regardless of species. They tend to be very curious puppies and like to meet and befriend anyone and everyone that they can.

Although I am making Boston Terriers to sound like angel dogs who could never be agressive or mean, ANY AND ALL DOGS HAVE THE ABILITY TO SHOW AGRESSION. It all really depends on the how the dog is trained and handled. I have had first hand experience of Boston Terriers who have been mean, tried to bite and wanted nothing to do with new people or animals. It is important when puppies that you play with, have others play with, and try your best to introduce your Boston to other animals.

As well as agression, all dog breeds have the ability to be sweet and loving. My two dogs, a Doberman Pincher and America Pit Bull Terrier were both introduced to my Boston as she was a puppy and taught not to play mean with her. The three of them get along great and often love playing together. Boston Terriers are great with other dogs, and most dogs depending on how much interaction learn to be great with puppies

It is very important when picking out a dog breed of your choice that you research a breed that will be good for you, and possibly good for your family if you plan on keeping them as a family pet. In this sense, Boston Terriers are the perfect choice.
However, as important as it is to pick out what kind of breed would be perfect for you, it is important for you to learn information about the person breeding the dogs. Puppy farms and mills are generally low kept and the puppies are not handled as much as puppies comming from an individual. Puppies in small litters are handled more and become far more personable dogs.
Hershey, for example came from a small litter in which the family only had a few puppies and two older Boston Terriers. They were very helpful in advising how to care for her at such a young age and giving information on breeding as well as AKC registering.

Boston Terriers are an extremely friendly, loyal and family oriented breed. These "snugglers" are full of energy and make great companions for some one who loves dogs and enjoys a puppy full of energy.
The Boston on the left is my puppy Hershey, an AKC registered, year old Boston Terrier who is snuggling up to me on the couch as I type.
According to http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/, they are also known as the Boston Bull and are extremely gentle, alert and very intelligent. They also refer to Bostons as very high strung dogs and I do somewhat agree. Although hyper, Hershey as the ability and really enjoys spending an entire day napping on the couch as long as you are willing to keep her company!
